Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Few bands have been as consistently great as Spoon, and they certainly don’t drop the ball here on their sixth full-length album, other than the ridiculous title they gave this outstanding set of songs. There’s a ton of brilliant tracks to choose from here, but my favorite remains “Finer Feelings.”

Wilco – Sky Blue Sky

Is it possible that this extended VW ad just might be this veteran band’s most resonating collection of songs? As Jeff Tweedy himself sings in “Walken,” the more I think about it, I know it’s true.

Jim White – Transnormal Skiperoo

This latest offering from ethereal cowboy Jim White comes awfully close to matching the soaring heights of perfection achieved by his previous effort, Drill a Hole in That Substrate and Tell Me What You See. “Crash Into The Sun” is just one of many standout tracks.

Black Francis – Bluefinger

Frank Black slips back into his Black Francis persona for this return to that Pixies sound of yore. “Your Mouth Into Mine” is my favorite among an entire album full of worthy candidates.

Superb set of mid-tempo pop-rock, featuring “She’s Fantastic.”

Jens Lekman – Night Falls Over Kortedala

Jens is back with another quirky collection of oddly endearing ballads, “A Postcard to Nina” being perhaps the quirkiest and most endearing of them all.

The Ike Reilly Assassination – We Belong to the Staggering Evening

Straight from America’s heartland comes this in-your-face indie rock outfit with another album of unvarnished truth for the unwashed masses, with “I Hear the Train” leading the charge.
